in Non Profit Resumes

There are many non profit organizations. The key lies in doing your research before applying to any non profit and ensuring that your resume meets their requirements. You first need to understand what the organization is looking for. Some of the tips to keep in mind include:

  • Know the organization: find out what the organization does, its mission statement and its objectives. This will enable you to know how you can benefit the employer and emphasize the qualities they are looking for, making you seem like you would be an ideal additional team member.
  • Any volunteer experience you have had in the past should be emphasized. Employers in the non profit like to see that one has initiative and is involved in community activities. This is because most non profits are geared towards the community.
  • If you are transiting from the profit sector, most non profits might think that you will be expensive to hire. You can explain in your cover letter or career objective why you are making the switch and highlight any transferable skills you will bring from the profit sector. For instance, entrepreneurial skills.
  • Highlight your accomplishments. Specifically illustrate relevant areas where you have pursued tasks or projects successfully. This will quantify your accomplishments and give credibility to your skills.
  • Hype your skills. Most employers want to see that you have the specific skills they are looking for and will be able to get the job done. Do not feel shy to advertise your skills.
